When I began sports journalism in North Carolina m

When I began sports journalism in North Carolina more than 20 years ago, I wanted to learn about NASCAR, a sport that was new to me. Rather than approach driver or crew chief types, I decided to do something different. To learn how cars move, positions on track, what a driver feels, team coordination, etc., I asked around for leads on someone who sees it all, the voice in the driver’s ear, the spotter. Everyone told me to reach out to Big Earl (Earl Barban). Tonight at practice and qualifying for tomorrow’s Memorial Day weekend Coke 600, I was lucky enough to cross paths not only with Earl but also with his driver, NASCAR Hall of Famer, Jimmie Johnson. Earl is still in Jimmie’s ear, and our entire afternoon discussion that we had so many years ago (when all I asked for was 30 minutes) still sticks with me today.

First book of the summer. A great read about a sport I love but very uncomfortable and unsettling to learn, in depth, about what went on behind the scenes for so long. So many lessons! Running can (and should) be a source of inspiration, a religious practice, a way of interfacing with the world, a way to learn how to be in your body (and soul) not the dark stuff.
